Toronto / Syracuse - Oct 15, 2020 - Enwave, the largest core-competency district energy provider in North America, announces a long-term alliance with Syracuse University to support the ongoing campus growth with reliable and sustainable energy. This marks another successful partnership for Enwave which already serves multiple higher education campuses, hospitals, and municipalities seeking resilient, low-carbon energy solutions.

Enwave has taken operational responsibility for the energy system and will work with the University to develop a robust energy management program for the campus and a modernization plan that will support the University’s commitment to become carbon neutral by 2040.

“This partnership allows Syracuse University to focus our resources in support of our core mission: excellence in teaching, learning, research and scholarship,” says Amir Rahnamay-Azar, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. “We are delighted to have secured a best-in-class, specialized energy partner to operate and modernize our campus district energy system. The University looks forward to working closely with our partners at Enwave.”

The University first announced the review of its energy operations in 2018.  After a comprehensive evaluation, the University decided to transfer operations of the energy system to Enwave.

“This agreement will support the growth, jobs and environmental imperatives that will drive future planning on our campus,” says Rahnamay-Azar. “Our partnership with Enwave is expected to result in a modern state-of-the-art facility, which will provide reliable, sustainable energy to the University area for decades to come.”

The University’s energy system—which runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year—not only heats and cools the main campus, it also serves surrounding buildings, including the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse VA Medical Center and Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital.

“We are proud to be Syracuse University’s long-term partner in building a world-class district energy system on campus that will serve the broader community and support the University’s vision for growth. In addition, we welcome the employees who currently operate the energy system to the Enwave team,” says Doug Castleberry, President and Chief Operating Officer, Enwave USA. “Campuses across North America are consistently looking for more sustainable, low-carbon energy – and Syracuse University is setting a strong example by seizing the opportunities that exist around transitioning to energy-efficient solutions.”
