Environment
The Environment is another important principle of sustainability. At Enwave, reducing our collective environmental footprint and improving the world for future generations is the cornerstone of our core values. From its inception and especially after the corporate re-organization of 1999, Enwave has focused on developing projects that are efficient and whenever possible, renewable. From our DLWC project, which is explained in more detail herein, to our Low Nox boiler at Walton Street, Enwave is committed to energy efficiency as the first step toward our goal of 100% renewable energy generation.
Our signature Deep Lake Water Cooling project is not only reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions but it is also providing cleaner drinking water. Because air conditioning uses so much electricity at peak times throughout the summer, DLWC eases the load on the electricity grid when the system is stretched to its limits.
Enwave is aggressively pursing other new and emerging technologies with the intention of incorporating them into our business model. Where feasible, these may include:
- solar panels
- ground source heat pumps
- windmills
- Cogeneration to make more efficient use of depleting fossil-fuels until we can eliminate their use altogether.
Enwave has detailed plans to build cogeneration at its two steam plants and is currently working on a much larger project that will provide natural gas fired power and steam to most of downtown Toronto. In addition, the company recently announced its partnership with Bright Star Developments to develop an extensive ground source heating and cooling network for the very exciting development at Crates Landing on Lake Simcoe. Crate's Landing is a multi use development that will include a Marriott hotel, restaurants, spas, condominiums and retirement residences.
Climate change is top of mind for many citizens across Canada and the world. It is an issue that has united concerned citizens and this concern is reflected in their demands of business and governments to act responsibly to reduce emissions of greenhouse gasses. For the real estate ownership and development business the message is clear; build and operate environmentally sound buildings if you want to attract buyers and tenants.
Business is clearly listening as the majority of new building construction is being designed and built to achieve LEED Certification. Sensing this change in the market place, Enwave has been actively and aggressively pursuing developments similar to the Crate's Landing throughout Canada. Developers and existing property owners are taking notice and are showing keen interest in working with Enwave because of our reputation as a leader in the delivery of financially sound, environmental friendly energy projects.
